You
illustrated the cover and promotional material for Jon Roket’s novel,
Kentucky is Wider. How did you get involved with this project?
Jon and I know each other from Cleveland. Jon had seen some illustrations I'd done for my old boss Matthew Mohr's band, S-Hotel. A few years later we both ended up in Chicago. Jon asked me to do some illustrations for Kentucky, which he was still in the process of writing at the time. The whole thing took forever to do because I ended up designing the book and cover as well. I would love to do more projects like that it was exactly the kind of work I enjoy doing best.
Music plays a major theme throughout much of your work. What are some
of your favorite album covers of all-time and why?
Well...that’s hard to say. I’m really bad at picking favorites of just about anything. I’m all about the iPod these days...so I don’t really pay too much attention to new covers. The first to come to mind for me is probably the Built to Spill album Perfect From Now On. I used to be obsessed with Built to Spill and I love the loose style. It looks more like art you’d want to hang on your wall. The other would be the self-titled Boss Hog album. I love the blocks of color, and the design still stands up over time.
If someone filthy rich paid you to complete a series of paintings
based on your surroundings, and would put you up anywhere in the world, where would you go for inspiration?
At the moment it’s winter in Chicago, so definitely anywhere warm with lots of interesting characters around. I’m always checking out the stylish girls and guys standing on the corner, waiting for the bus or sitting on the train for inspiration. I’ve been talking with a friend of mine about taking a trip to Barcelona, so maybe I’d go there for the weather and the people.
Is there anything you would like to say about your t-shirt design?
I think
I doodled the picture of the girl while I was at work one day
waiting for my computer to reboot. I used to try and draw quick
sketches off the top of my head whenever my computer would crash
which used to happen a lot. It was a fun exercise and I ended
up saving a bunch of the drawings that I’ve used later on.
