You’ve
been a part of Space 1026 for a while now. Tell us
a little about it and how it has evolved over the years?
It’s a big workspace that pulls awesome people together
to make cool stuff & have fun. I moved to Philly in 1999 to
be closer to it. I could talk forever about it, but i'm too tierd.
I will say it’s glorious & it has been very good to
me. Heres a feature if you curious.... Philadelphia
Weekly.
You
designed the promotional material for the documentary, “Rock
School,” that tells the story of the Paul Green School of
Rock Music. You also painted a mural in the school. How
did you first become involved with Paul Green?
I had a solo show at Spector Gallery in 2002 & the owner got
the kids to play in the alley for the opening. Then about a month
later I saw Paul Green at a bar & he hired me to make their
posters & get them up all over. So I faked it & said i
could screen print & made myself learn with alotta help from
the people around me. Making their show posters has been my main
freelance job since then. Now they’re growing so fast with
schools all over, I can get as much work as I want with posters,
murals, hall of fame plaques, handbook, & brochure designs.
The rock school is really awesome & i'm glad to be a part
of it.
Your design for SH makes me laugh because it reminds
me of Danzig reviving the single, “Mother” renaming
it, “Mother 1993”. That was definitely
a “call in the reaper” move. Could you tell us
more about the design?
I'm not sure what you mean, but i meant the shirt to kinda say...
”DANZIG IS EPIC & CHECK OUT HIS WICKED REAPER.”
And probably Blue Oyster Cult were in my subconcious somewhere.
I just read today that Philadelphia is getting a 5 million
dollar outdoor skate park. I looked at the plans and
was really impressed. From all I've read, Philadelphia seems
to have a great artist and skateboarding community. Has
it always been this way?
I would say Philadelphia has amazing artists & skateboarders
& they inspire & help each other out. It’s also
a very interesting city that’s very alive, gritty, &
real, which is ideal for artists & skateboarders. I wouldn’t
give the mayor any credit for these communities. I've been hearing
about that 5 mill skatepark for about 5 years & the only reason
it looks like it’s gonna happen is from dedicated, organized
skaters going to city councel meetings for years & raising
their own money. Besides FDR–which was built by skateboarders,
not the city–theres no public skatepark & there hasn’t
ever been. As far as $ for art things, I suppose it’s like
any other city in America, which means not alot. People definitely
make awesome things happen here & that’s the best part
about it for me. It’s hands down the best city to make art
in & I don’t skateboard too much anymore, but when i
do it’s really fun.
I grew up a big Phillies fan and when I saw your paintings
of the 1980 line up at The Mockbee (Cincinnati, OH), as part of
the Beautiful Losers opening weekend, I was stoked to say the
least. I'm thinking that your next shirt should be
of Von Hayes or Ozzie Virgil?
I would probably go a little older like Mike Schmidt or Bake McBride.
If you were to start a Thin Lizzy cover band what would
it’s name be?
SITAMOIA or BLACK EAGLES from Phil Lynott’s first band.
Do you have any upcoming shows or projects you want
to get the word out on?
There’s a couple SPACE 1026 group shows coming up. One in
NYC on some pier in September & one at Yeba Buena in S.F.
in January. I think I’m doing something in Chicago called
“Fun With Dead Bodies” that’s a group show.
I forget when that is. I really just wanna make songs & record
& play shows with my band SWEATHEART. It’s the biggest
thing in my head for now.
